Basic Adoption Requirements

bullet This section has been updatedYou must be at least 24 years of age and demonstrate the maturity to parent a child. If older, it is necessary that you be able to keep up with a normal, active child. If married or in a committed relationship, must have lived together for at least two years. Single persons can qualify.

bulletYou must have sufficient income to support yourself and your family. Your sole income cannot be AFDC, SSI, or unemployment. If you are receiving SSI as a supplement to your income, you must explain why you are receiving benefits.

bulletYou must have sufficient bed space. The child would need their own bed. Two children may share a bedroom as long as they are the same gender. Opposite sex children can share a room if they are under five years of age.

bulletWe prefer a two-year age difference between your birth children and the child that would be placed.

bulletYou will need to be fingerprinted along with all adults over 18 years old that reside in the home. You cannot have a criminal record that would preclude you from being a foster parent (e.g., charges of child abuse). Exemptions can be made by Lilliput.

bulletWe will do a criminal background check and a child abuse check.

bulletWe ask that you do not have any birth children in your home less than one year of age and that you are not actively trying to get pregnant.

If you still have questions or need more specific information regarding these requirements, please contact us. We'll be glad to answer your questions.
